Do you have dark circles under your eyes and don’t know why?

Some people are more prone to dark circles under their eyes. The exact cause of this is not known.

It is believed that the following things (among others) could attribute to dark circles;

  • It may run in families
  • Having a history of long standing perinasal allergies
  • Leaking blood vessels under the eye
  • Eyestrain
  • Rubbing your eyes
  • Cosmetic use
  • Medication side-effects
  • Insomnia and general tiredness

There is also a condition called periorbital hyperpigmentation, where too much Melanin is produced in the skin under the eyes, this is more commonly seen in people with a darker complexion.

Research tells us there is a strong link with developing dark circles during prolonged episodes of stress, and often people suffering from Adrenal Fatigue will have this problem.

This theory fits in well with what is believed from a Chinese Medicine perspective. The Adrenal Glands sit on top of the Kidneys and dark circles under the eyes can indicate a deficiency in the Kidney energy. So make sure you get enough sleep, eat nutritious foods and practice stress reducing techniques, as this can help.

Also having regular Shiatsu treatments will support your kidney energy, help Adrenal Fatigue and could in turn improve your dark circles if it is stress related.

Some of my clients have also found that using an eye gel such as white tea toning eye gel from NYR Organic improves their dark circles. You only need a tiny bit of the gel and the bottle lasts ages!
